How to send your referral campaign emails with Gather’s integration with Klaviyo - Retargeting emails

Gather’s integration with Klaviyo enables you to send certain campaign emails using your Klaviyo account.

In order to use Klaviyo, you need to integrate your Gather account with Klaviyo. To do this input your private Klaviyo API key in the ‘integrations’ section of your Gather account and fetch your lists from Klaviyo.

In this article we show you how to use Klaviyo to send out a campaign retargeting email to advocates who have not made any referrals. This email should act as a reminder, for the advocate, of the benefits of making referrals for them and their friends. This email should contain the advocate’s unique referral link so that they can share it with their friends.

This email could also include a link to the advocate’s referral dashboard.

This email can be sent by Gather on your behalf, in the editor section of your referral campaign. If you don’t want Gather to send the email, ensure you turn it off in your campaign preferences.

For the purposes of setting up emails for your campaign, it can be beneficial to set up a Klaviyo list specifically for your referral campaign. In the following example, we have set up a list called Gather RAF.

Retargeting Klaviyo Email Flow

  • Create segment for advocates with no pending or successful referrals, see the following image for an example of the segment settings:

  • Create a retargeting email flow with the trigger set to joining the segment ‘advocates with no pending or successful referrals’ .

  • Edit the email with your branding and copy. Use the Gather email template as a guide (under email editor).

  • Edit the email inline with your branding.

  • Insert the custom property REFERRER_URL in the email, this is the advocate’s unique referral link. This can be inserted to be shared or included in a button for friends to click on and load the referral campaign on your site.

  • Tailor your flow automation by resending the email again after a time delay or when the properties of the advocates changes e.g. when they have pending but no successful emails.

  • Importantly, ensure that you have de-activated the ‘promotor retargeting email’ in your campaign preferences, so that the email is not sent by Gather.

Ensure that you test your flow using the preview and testing options in Klaviyo. You may need to make test referrals to ensure that you have profiles in your list with the correct custom properties available.
