Editing the Email Invitation sent by your Customers

Learn how to edit the email invitation your customer sends to their friends

In this article we show you how, using the Gather Editor, to edit the invitation sent by your customer to their friends. This article is for those campaigns where, in the preferences section, you have selected the invitation mode; Opens external email client (Sent by your customer).

As seen above, when you opt for your customers to send emails to their friends, they will be given the choice of inviting with their email app, invite with Gmail and with Yahoo.

If you selected to send the email on behalf of your customers, please refer to the following article.

Using the Editor tab we will show you how to edit and use the following features of your email invitation:

  1. Subject line

  2. Body of the email

  3. Merge tags

  4. Formatting

Navigate to the Editor section select ‘Email Invitation’ to edit the invitation.

1. Subject line

The subject line is what your customer's friend will see when the email appears in their browser. To edit the subject line simply click in the subject line box and enter your preferred text.

The default message will read 'Here's a Gift'.

Please note, merge tags cannot be inserted in the subject line of an email.

2. Body of email

Gather will insert the default message in the body of the email for you. You can easily tailor the content on the email by clicking in the box and entering your preferred text.

You might like to insert here more context around your brand and tell friends about the brand and why they should join their friends.

Remember to write the email in the voice of the advocate.

3. Merge tags

Gather uses merge tags to make your email invitations more personal. The default email includes your account name and a link to the your referral campaign invitation.

You also have the option of including the following 3 merge tags;

  1. Customer full name

  2. Customer first name

  3. Invitation link

The process for inserting merge tags is simple. Click in the body of the message where you would like to insert a tag and then click on the tag you would like to insert.

The {invitation_URL} merge tag is perhaps the most important as this will insert the unique URL link, for your advocate, into the email for their friend to click on.

Please read the Merge tag tips, on the right of the editor page, for further information.

Now your email is ready and will be inserted as the default text when your customer choses to send an invitation through either their email client, Gmail or Yahoo.

Don’t forget; before you navigate away from the page, please remember to save your changes.

4. Formatting

Remember the email is being sent from your Advocates to their friends from their native email account. The body of the message is pasted into the their email using a Mailto link which limits the editing available.

It is possible to edit email further using URL encodings. To find out more about how you can insert encodings to edit the email content check out the w3school.com website. We suggest you use the UTF-8 codes.

Perhaps the most valuable edit is the page break. This allows you to insert paragraphs to the email body. Another useful resource to assist with this is Urlencoder.io. By adding %0A%0A to the body of the email this will insert 2 page breaks to the email message allowing you to insert paragraphs.
