Referral Program with Okendo and Gather

A customer who writes a good review, is a great customer to ask for a referral.

One of the prerequisites to a successful refer-a-friend program is satisfied customers who would want to recommend your brand to their network.

With both Okendo’s and Gather’s integrations with Klaviyo, you can automatically target happy customers and incentivise them to refer their friends.

In this article, we show you how to do so in 5 steps.

  1. Integrate Okendo with Klaviyo

Okendo provides a great integration with Klaviyo. The integration allows you to add social proof elements to your marketing emails and compose automated flows.

Automated flows is where the main value comes, from the Okendo-Klaviyo-Gather integration. The team at Okendo provide a deep dive into how you can build an automated referral request email shortly after a customer writes a good review, here.

As the above article points out, “When asking customers for referrals, perfecting the timing is a must”. In addition to asking for a referral shortly after a purchase, another great time to ask for a referral is shortly after a customer writes a good review.

Okendo notifies Klaviyo when a customer posts a positive review so that you can trigger Klaviyo to send an automated referral request, whilst the review is still fresh.

Also with Okendo’s integration with Klaviyo, the ratings given by customers are added as properties to contacts in Klaviyo.

2. Integrate Gather with Klaviyo

Gather’s Klaviyo integration provides dynamic data points that help you facilitate easy invitations from your customer to their friends.

To do so, Gather provides two key capabilities:

  • The ability to create a unique referral link for each of your Klaviyo subscribers, which shows up in Klaviyo as a property.

  • Syncing performance data to customer records on Klaviyo, which include attributes like the number of referrals a customer has made and how many referrals left to unlock a particular tier.

With both Okendo and Gather’s integration with Klaviyo, the following snapshot shows the properties that are pulled into a customer’s profile on Klaviyo:

3. Create a Segment in Klaviyo

After connecting Okendo and Gather to Klaviyo, you can create a segment in Klaviyo that consists of customers who have left positive reviews on your Shopify store.

4. Add a New Flow to Klaviyo

Once Okendo and Gather are integrated with Klaviyo, you can add a flow which looks for a Trigger and sends and email.

The Trigger is essentially a contact who is added to the segment you created. In the example in the screenshot below the segment name is ‘Wrote a Good Review’.

The email that is triggered can be a call-to-action email to refer friends. The email is automatically sent to customers who have shown to be a happy customer by writing a positive review.

The refer-a-friend call-to-action in the email can link to a customer’s referral dashboard that is embedded on your Shopify site.

Also, Gather’s feature which allows you to add a unique referral link to each subscriber also means that you can include a customer’s referral link in their emails.

In the example below, the referral link is added with a condition that it exists. This could be done programmatically using Klaviyo’s variables syntax.

You’re all Set

By integrating Okendo with Klaviyo, and Gather with Klaviyo, adding a segment in Klaviyo and adding an automation that responds to the Klaviyo segment; you have everything in place to facilitate the following steps:

A customer writes a positive review.

They receive a thank you email note, with a call to action to refer a friend, with an incentive.

In the email, there would be a link present pointing to the customer’s dashboard. If the customer had enrolled as an advocate before writing a review, the email can contain their referral link to share (since this referral link would be included in the customer’s profile as a property).

They can refer a friend by either clicking through to access their referral dashboard, or by simply forwarding the email to their friends if they have their referral link in the email. This smoothes out the referral process, making inviting friends as easy as an email forward.
